I went to Dyken Pond with Grandpa this weekend! We left on Thursday night and got up there really late. We went to bed after lighting a fire to warm the place up, and we were toasty in the morning! We made some pancakes together, and then headed off on an epic train chasing adventure. We'll fill in Grandpa's account now:
Preston and I had multiple good adventures Friday and Saturday. We drove up to Dyken Pond Thursday night. The cottage was 53 degrees when we arrived at 10:15 p.m. We started a fire in the wood stove, then climbed into warm sleeping bags up in the loft and slept warmly/soundly all through the night and the cottage was up to 68 degrees when we awoke on Friday morning.
Friday was largely devoted to the important agenda item of chasing trains on both Uncle Ted's railroad (Pan Am), and Tia Debbie's railroad (Vermont Railways). There's a daily noon-ish meet of trains from each railroad company in North Bennington, VT. The engine crews exchange trains with each other, then head back to their respective starting points. So it's a pretty reliable way to be sure of finding several good freight trains to chase.
Saturday morning we spent at the cottage. Grandpa got the shutters down, and Preston found all the toys that he had enjoyed playing with last summer. We launched the canoe, and went over to blueberry island to play hide-and-seek, but since the leaves haven't come out, there are no good places to hide just yet.
On our drive back to Pennsylvania we took a detour off the NY Thruway at Newburgh to go see the spectacular overlook perched on the cliffs of Storm King Mountain overlooking the Hudson River.
